Cookie & Storage Policy
Cookies
Helicase sets no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and has no third-party scripts that could set them. If you never sign in, it sets no cookies at all.
Signing in to an account sets only the cookies needed to keep you signed in:
helicase.session_token
Purpose: Keeps you signed in.
Lasts: 30 days if you choose “Keep me signed in”, otherwise until you close your browser.
helicase.dont_remember
Purpose: Remembers that you did not choose “Keep me signed in”.
Lasts: Until you close your browser.
helicase.two_factor
Purpose: During sign-in with two-step verification, remembers that your password was right while you enter your code.
Lasts: 10 minutes.
helicase.trust_device
Purpose: Only if you tick “Trust this device”: skips the code step on this device.
Lasts: 30 days.
On secure connections their names begin with __Secure-. Scripts in the page cannot read them, and browsers do not send them when another website loads something from Helicase in the background. Because they exist only to provide something you asked for, signing in, Helicase does not ask for consent to set them. Signing out removes the session cookies.
What is saved in your browser
Helicase saves your display choices in your browser’s local storage, so the site looks the way you set it next time, and keeps your last submitted answers to each quiz there too. Nothing is saved until you change a setting or submit a quiz, and these saved values are never sent anywhere.
helicase:theme
Remembers: Dark theme, light theme, or match your device
Saved: When you change the theme in Settings
helicase:level
Remembers: Beginner, intermediate or advanced explanations
Saved: When you change the reading level
helicase:motion
Remembers: Whether to reduce motion on this site
Saved: When you change the motion setting
helicase:quiz:<quiz>
Remembers: One for each quiz you submit: the questions you were asked, your answers and the feedback, so they are still there if you reload the page
Saved: When you submit a quiz. Choosing Try again removes it
Each value stays until you remove it. Because these values only remember choices and answers you make, and are saved only after you make them, Helicase does not ask for consent to store them.
Other things your browser keeps
- Like any website, your browser may keep copies of Helicase’s files in its cache so pages load faster. This is ordinary browser behavior, under your browser’s control.
- The site search downloads its index into the page’s memory while the page is open. It is not saved on your device.
How to remove saved settings
Open Settings and choose Clear saved settings, or clear this site’s data in your browser’s settings. Helicase will then use its defaults: the dark theme, intermediate explanations and your device’s motion setting. To remove a quiz’s saved answers, choose Try again on that quiz; clearing this site’s data removes them all.
Changes
If Helicase ever needs another cookie, this page will be updated first to say what it is for and how long it lasts. See also the Privacy Policy.
