Terms of Use

The ground rules for using Helicase, in plain language.

About these terms

These terms apply when you use Helicase, a website run by Easton Tobias. By using the site you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site. The Privacy Policy and the Cookie & Storage Policy explain how information is handled.

Free, and nothing for sale

Helicase is free to use. Nothing is sold on this site: there are no purchases, subscriptions or payments, and so there is nothing to refund.

Accounts

You do not need an account to use Helicase. Accounts are for people aged 13 and over, one person per account. Keep your password to yourself, and turn on two-step verification if you can. You can delete your account at any time. We may suspend an account that is used to break these terms.

For learning, not advice

Helicase is educational. Its explanations are summaries of published sources, written to help people learn biology. They are not medical, legal, safety or other professional advice, and they are not a substitute for it. Do not use Helicase to make decisions about your health, anyone else’s health or safety. Ask a qualified professional.

Simulations are simplified models. They show how a system tends to behave and should not be used to predict what will happen in a real organism, culture or ecosystem.

Accuracy

We work to keep every claim accurate and linked to its source; here is how. Even so, content may contain mistakes or fall out of date as science moves on. If you find a problem, please tell us.

Using Helicase fairly

Please do not:

  • try to break, overload or get around the security or rate limits of the site;
  • use automated tools to download the site or its research search in bulk (the literature databases offer their own services for that);
  • use the site for anything unlawful, or to harm other people;
  • present Helicase content as your own professional advice.

We may block access that breaks these rules or puts the service at risk.

Content and copyright

Helicase’s original text, diagrams, simulations and software belong to Easton Tobias. You are welcome to use the site for personal study and for teaching, and to link to any page. Copying or republishing substantial parts of the site needs permission.

Cited papers, books and pages belong to their authors and publishers. Helicase links to them rather than copying them, and notes a reuse licence where one is known.

Helicase links to journals, databases and agency pages. Those sites have their own terms and privacy policies, and we are not responsible for their content or availability.

Changes to the site

Helicase is a work in progress. Features may change, move or be removed, and the site may sometimes be unavailable.

What the site promises, and what it does not

To the extent the law allows, Helicase is provided as it is and as available, without promises that it will be error free, complete or always available.

To the extent the law allows, Easton Tobias is not responsible for indirect or consequential losses that come from using Helicase or relying on its content. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, and nothing in them takes away rights you have as a consumer.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, except where the law of the place you live gives you protections that cannot be overridden.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change, this page will be updated with a new date at the top. Using the site after a change means you accept the new terms.
